Back in March, we took a trip to Saugatuck to celebrate J’s birthday. We rented a cabin with some friends and went on several hikes around the area.

In an unusual move for us, we didn’t eat out much. We mostly snacked for lunch and cooked a couple of the nights for dinner. The only night we went out, we went to Guardian Brewing Company, which I had already wrote a blog for.

That doesn’t mean I didn’t do my homework and look for restaurants though.

I was in the Saugatuck area last week for work so I started diving in to my archive looking for some place to grab dinner. A little sandwich shop in Douglas got the nod.

The Farmhouse Deli & Pantry is on Blue Star Highway in Douglas just south of Center Street where you would turn to head out to Oval Beach. The shop is a small multi-tenant building with a few other storefronts.

The restaurant is a pretty small counter service deli with a large array of sandwiches. There are also some high end pantry items on shelves in the rest of the space. In addition to sandwiches, they have organic coffee and juice drinks, desserts, and a deli case. I had actually put my order in online so all I really need to do was walk inside and pick it up.

There were so many delicious sounding sandwiches to choose from but, like usual, it was the Cubano that won my click.

The Cubano is pretty typical Cuban sandwich. The bread is a Dutch crunch roll that eventually gets pressed to give it a nice grilled taste. In between the bread is pulled pork, porchetta, Gruyere, pickles, mustard, and red onions. The sandwich had a large amount of meat stuffed inside the bread and also a large amount of mustard. I was trying to eat in the car and had a hard time keeping it off my pants. I realized when I unwrapped it that I wouldn’t be able to eat and drive so I just sat in the parking lot.

The sandwich was insanely good. The bread was perfectly toasted and soaked up the juice from the meat and the vinegar in the mustard to add another layer of flavor. Every part of the sandwich was delicious on it’s own so stacking it all together into one meal just upped the deliciousness of each part.

The cost for the sandwich and pickled was $11 before tip.

I love good sandwich places. The Farmhouse Deli & Pantry is a good sandwich place. Sandwiches can be so simple but a masterful sandwich takes top notch ingredients. The Farmhouse delivers on each layer.
