110 N. Farmer StreetNow that J and I have been in Kalamazoo almost four years, it wouldn’t be surprising if you start to see some repeats blog posts from places we visited after we first moved here. This one is kind of an exception to that as the last time I blogged about The Cupcake Zoo was only a little over a year ago after we picked up cupcakes at the Kalamazoo Farmers’ Market.
At that time, they were a special occasion bakery. They had a physical address is Otsego but no storefront where you could walk in and get cupcakes.
A few months ago, a couple of co-workers of mine were in Otsego on a Friday and they saw a lady walking down the street with cupcakes. They asked her where she got them from and she pointed to The Cupcake Zoo which now had Walk-In Friday’s. Fast forward a few months and now they have walk-in sales everyday!
This past Thursday, J noticed some delicious looking cupcake creations on The Cupcake Zoo’s Facebook page which would be available for Friday Walk-In. She asked if I would go. I didn’t really give her a solid answer, but once L and I got up, we headed to Otsego to surprise Mommy with cupcakes when she got home from work.
The Cupcake Zoo is on Farmer Street just to the north of M-89 in downtown Otsego. There is parking available on the street and I found a spot right in front of the building.
The walk in window is down a little hallway once you walk in to the building. They have all of the cupcakes and pastries available that day on display on the counter and they menu written on a chalkboard off to the side.
The cupcake J saw on the Facebook page that she really wanted was the Peanut Butter Heath. It’s a chocolate cupcake topped with peanut butter butter cream frosting, a semisweet ganache, and crushed Heath bars. That looked really good to me to, so I got two of those.
Since two cupcakes is never enough, I also picked up two of the Vanilla Vanilla cupcakes. These vanilla bean cakes are topped with vanilla bean cream cheese frosting and sprinkles.
The bill for the four cupcakes was eight bucks which I paid with cash.
We happened to make it home before J so I got L in her high chair and tried to start feeding her lunch. My mistake was putting the container of cupcakes on the table where she could see them. She wasn’t interested in real food…she wanted the cupcakes.
Like a good daddy, I gave in and pulled one of the Vanilla Vanilla cupcakes out of the plastic container and gave it to her. She went straight for the frosting and by the time J got home five minutes later, L was down to about half of the cake which she then offered to Mommy.
J thanked her and instead grabbed one of the Peanut Butter Heath cupcakes. It was delicious as the pictures looked online. After I went to work, J and L split the other Vanilla Vanilla cupcake so I didn’t even get to try that one. J said was almost better than the Peanut Butter Heath.
When I got home from work that night, I had instructions to eat the remaining cupcake…so I did and I’m so glad I did. It was a super moist cake with a sweet, delicious butter cream frosting. I typically prefer vanilla cupcakes, but this chocolate one was incredibly yummy.
The Cupcake Zoo doing walk-in sales could be dangerous for my ever expanding waistline. The cupcakes are so good and so worth the short drive to Otsego.
