Saugatuck.  One of my favorite lakeshore towns.  We’ve taken a few vacation weekends there over the last few years, but weren’t able to make it this past summer due to our trip out west for a wedding.

I love any chance I get to go to Saugatuck….even if it is for work in late fall.

A co-worker and I headed to downtown Saugatuck last Sunday.  We had a job to do in the early evening then we were heading back to Grand Rapids.

Once we were finished, I was hungry.  I don’t think I had eaten at all that day and it was well past dinner time, so I went in search of someplace to do take-out from.

On the way in to town, I noticed we past a pizza place.  As we were packing up the car to head back to Grand Rapids, I looked up a menu to Scooter’s Café & Pizzeria so I could call in an order.

Scooter’s has been a staple in downtown Saugatuck for several years now.  It’s Culver Street on the south side of downtown near Kalamazoo Lake.  The business shares a building with a Mexican restaurant (used to be Hickory Pit BBQ before a disastrous sale of the business by the original owners), but they are not connected on the inside.

Scooter’s has the vibe of more of a pub than a café.  There’s a bar in the back of the space while a more family friendly dining room takes up the space near the front.  It actually seemed like it’d be a pretty comfortable place to sit and eat dinner.

I had put in an order ahead of time so when I walked in, my pizza was already boxed up and ready to go.

I decided to go small to save some money and to try and to try to prevent making a pig of myself.

I ordered an 8″ Bacon Double Cheeseburger pizza.  The guy who answered the phone made sure I realized an 8″ was more of a personal pizza and it would just be cut in to four triangles.  I thought that was all I really wanted so I told him I was ok with that.  The pizza cost just a little over $10.

The box felt pretty light when I grabbed and when I popped it open, the pizza looked pretty small.  It was the advertised size, it just seemed smaller than I had pictured it in my head.

The hand tossed pizza came topped with a thick layer of ground beef mixed with bacon and cheddar cheese on top of a traditional red sauce.

The pizza was really, really good.  I was mad at myself for not ordering a bigger size because I was still really hungry when I got done.  There was a really generous portion of the ground beef and the pizza really tasted like there was a bacon cheeseburger on top of the light, airy, hand tossed crust.  I ordered a smaller pizza because I get kind of gluttonous with pizza and I’m trying to prevent that.  This pizza was so yummy though that I felt like I cheated myself by going small.

Scooter’s Café and Pizzeria is a staple in this quaint lakeshore tourist community.  We’ve ordered from a couple of different pizza places in town and nearby Douglas in the past, but seem to have always overlooked Scooter’s.  We’ll know better know if we continue our summer Saugatuck vacations.
