Working alone is not one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy the company of another person on some of the long drives and, more importantly sometimes, I don’t like doing my co-workers job. It’s not that I can’t do it, I just don’t like it. That’s why I chose the job I did, but sometimes, it happens and I just have to deal with it and do the best I can. Fortunately, I usually get an easier version of my co-workers job than they would get, so it isn’t all bad.
Earlier this week, I got sent to the Muskegon area for a quick task while my co-worker headed to Van Buren County to do something else. The task I was assigned only took about ten minutes and it happened to be right around dinner time, so I decided to make the best of the situation and stop in for a burger at a place I don’t get to often enough.
G & L Chili Dogs is a small chain of Coney Island-style places in the Muskegon area. There are four restaurants total with two in Norton Shores, one in Muskegon Township, and one in Holland. The first time I had ever eaten at a G & L was at the other Norton Shores location last spring.
The G & L restaurants are sit-down restaurants with table or counter service, but they also offer a drive-thru option. Seeing as I was by myself, I decided just to hit up the drive-thru. I didn’t really have anywhere to be, but I really wasn’t in the mood to eat alone either.
I pulled up to the speaker and took a quick look at the menu. The thing I really liked last time I ate at G & L was their burgers. I decided to do that again. I ordered the Bacon Cheddar Burger and made it a double for an extra dollar twenty. I also asked for a large fry, but I don’t think they actually have large fries because when I got the meal, there was fries in with my burger plus I had an extra bag with fries in them. I think they just gave me two regular fries, but whatever. I got what I wanted.
I pulled around to the window to pay the bill which was just under $10 with a drink. The food is all made fresh, so it did take a little while for the food to come up, but there was no one in line behind me, so I just stayed at the window and waited.
About ten minutes later, I was handed a bag that contained a Styrofoam container with my burger and half my fries plus a paper bag with the rest of my fries. I pulled away from the window, then popped up the Styrofoam with a delicious looking burger inside.
The burger from G & L isn’t totally different from a fast food burger, but for some reason, it just tastes better. It’s a little greasy from cooking on a flat top and it’s topped with crispy bacon and two slices of a thick cut cheddar cheese. They’re not particularly thick patties, but they have overflowing with flavor.
The fries are pretty standard fast food fries and they actually didn’t have much flavor at all. I’m not a ketchup person, so I tend to rely on salt to flavor fries. These fries are had a little bit of salt on them, but they needed a little bit more. They were fine and filling, but they didn’t really live up to the deliciousness of the burger.
I’m sure I should probably be ordering chili dogs from G & L, but I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to bring myself to go away from the burger. It’s not gourmet nor even the close to the best burger I’ve ever had, but it is really, really good and so much better than sandwiches from comparable places. It’s too bad they only have locations in the Muskegon area…if I were closer, this would be a much more regular stop.
