It’s competition weekend again!

It feels like it’s always competition weekend in the spring.  As soon as we get done with one, we’re getting ready for the next.

This past weekend, L and J headed to the Chicago area for Ladybug.  They left Wednesday night after work because of space constraints at the Homewood-Flossmoor Ice Arena.

There isn’t a lot of space there so it’s hard to get ready at the rink which is how we usually do things.  They wanted to be able to get ready at a hotel before heading to the rink which meant they’d need to go over Wednesday night.

B didn’t go to this competition because we didn’t know he’d be ready for dance when we signed L up.   The competition then filled up really fast and they closed registration early so it was too late by the time his coaches said he was ready to go.

J’s parents came up to help me with B after school Thursday and Friday nights.   They typically feed the kids when they pick them up from school so I knew when I was heading home that B had already eaten.

I didn’t really feel like cooking and I was contemplating my options on the way home.  Fast food was fine because I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

I ended up pulling in to the Burger King on Stadium Drive to the east of Seneca Drive on the west side of Kalamazoo.  Why Burger King?  Well..because do you know how long it’s been since I’ve eaten at a Burger King?  No, you don’t because you don’t actually know me but I don’t think there’s a Burger King blog on this site and I’ve been doing this for almost 16 years.

As I start to add fast food places back in to this blog, the thing I’ve noticed, and really liked, is kiosk ordering. Burger King, at least at this location, does not do that.

I still had to go in and walk up to the counter to order. There was at least someone waiting for me when I walked in. I needed a few minutes tough because, as I said, it’s been a really, really long time since I’ve eaten at a Burger King.

Growing up, my parents liked to put Burger King in our rotation but I always hated it compared to McDonalds. The reason was kind of silly. We’d eat at Burger King when there was some kind of deal on Whoppers. I never liked Whoppers because I don’t like all the condiments. I’d always get my burgers plain with just meat and cheese…and by the time you do that with the Whopper, there’s not much left.

I’m an adult now and I don’t have to get the free Whopper. I actually found a few burgers on the menu that I wanted to try.

I ended up ordering the Double Bacon King meal (with the ketchup and mayo), fries and a large Coke. The cost was right around $13.

This is a Burger King that has been here for a while but has also been modernized with a newer design for the restaurant. There is a large dining room with several different layouts for seating. I had to get home so my in-laws could leave so I grabbed my sandwich to go.

This Burger King is only a couple of miles from my house so I just waited until I got home to eat instead of trying to eat in the car.

I grabbed the fries right away when I got in the door. They’re basic fast food fries. Not much to them but there was quite a bit shoved in to the box. They’re not a fast food fry that stands out in any way but they’re fine and a filling accompaniment to the burger.

The Double Bacon King was a pretty solid fast food burger. The sandwich is two flame-grilled patties with cheese between the layers and a lot more bacon that I expected piled on top. This sandwich was surprising. I had no expectations because, again, my main Burger King experience was from childhood and that was like 30+ years ago. My family goes there all the time now because they like the Chicken Fries and Frozen Fantas but that’s usually on nights I’m not with them. This is a sandwich I’d definitely order again if J were to be like, “let’s go to Burger King” instead of our usual Culvers or whatever is on 9th Street.

Burger King is not as bad as I remember it mostly because I could order what I wanted. The fries were nothing to write home about but the sandwich was actually pretty tasty. There was way more bacon than I was expecting and it was way more filling than I was expecting. Not a bad, quick meal on my way home from work.
