When we planned out trip to Nashville, long before I knew I was going to St. Louis this weekend, one of the most exciting things outside of the skating the kids were going to do was that the hotel we booked had a Waffle House in the parking lot.

L has picked up on my love for Waffle House after she and J took a trip to Tampa last year for skating.

This was another thing that bummed me out when I realized I wasn’t going to Nashville with everyone else.

When my colleague and I got to St. Louis, Waffle House was brought up. I got curious. Are there Waffle Houses in St. Louis.

The answer was yes. Yes there are.

Thursday was our really long work day. We started around 11 AM and worked until about 11 PM.

When we got back in the car to head to the hotel I asked if she was hungry. She kind of gave me a non-answer until I said this was our chance to go to Waffle House. That non-answer changed to a “let’s go.”

We picked the Waffle House in Maryland Heights. The shop is on Old Dorsett Road right off Dorsett Road. It’s wedged into a space between Homewood Suites and a shopping plaza. It looks like any other Waffle House…a long skinny building, and the property is the same. Long and skinny with just enough room for the building and a parking lot.

Waffle House is one of those if you been to one, you’ve been to them all. I have never been in a Waffle House that looks any different from this one in Maryland Heights. There’s a large counter right as you walk in the door then a few booths and tables on either side. Waffle House is never very big because they turn over tables really quickly.

I picked up the menu but I knew what I wanted before I even sat down. I always order the Steak and Eggs from Waffle House.

There’s a choice between a T-Bone steak and a Delmonic Steak. I chose the delmonico because it’s boneless and sort of like a rib-eye. It’s such a weird thing to say but I love breakfast steaks. They’re usually not the best cuts of meat. They’re not very thick, but they always pick up a lot of flavor the griddle they’re cooked on. Waffle House steaks are by no means the best steak you’ll ever have but it’s still the thing I crave whenever I see the big, yellow Waffle House sign.

The rest of the meal is standard breakfast stuff. Eggs over medium, white toast and the to-die for hash browns that only Waffle House can make. I got mine with jalapenos and ham just to add a bit of spice and a little saltiness. It’s not the most gourmet breakfast you’ll ever have but it will be one of the tastiest simple breakfasts.

My colleague ordered a waffle, bacon, and chocolate milk. Simple, yet tasty.

The bill for both of us was right around $30. I just grabbed the check since it was going to be expensed anyway. You pay at a cash register right next to the higher part of the counter.

I was going to Waffle House this night with or without my co-worker. It’s one of those restaurants I get really excited about when I see them driving down the highway because we don’t have any in Michigan. I immediately sent my daughter a picture and when she woke up the next morning, she told me to expect one from her when they get to Nashville. I was stoked we both got the Waffle House experience this weekend even if we were in different cities.
