Last Monday was a weird day. I had a lot of back and forth between Vicksburg and downtown Kalamazoo. I think I did the drive three times. Every time I’d get back to the office, I had to go back to where I was working in Vicksburg.
I was surprised to have passed more than one food truck on my travels up and down Portage Road/Street. I had to make a decision on what I wanted for dinner because I knew I was going to stop at one of them.
Tacos won out. As soon as I passed the taco truck, I knew what I was getting for dinner.
Tacos El Jefe was parked in front of Rocket Comics on the corner of Portage Street and Bloomfield Avenue in Kalamazoo just to the north of I-94. The red food truck was parked pretty close to the road so I found an open spot in front of the comic book store to park then walked back to see what they had.
The menu is next to the order window and it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a taco truck. There were no prices though and that did affect my order. I didn’t know how many tacos to order because I didn’t know if they were $3 or $5.
I ordered four steak tacos and the price came out to $13 so I’m guessing they were $3.25 each. I probably would have added one more had I known.
The guy who took my order told me I could just pull my car up to the back of the truck and he’d bring them out to me when they were done. It only took a few minutes before I had a delicious smelling bag of tacos and was heading back to the office.
I know this sounds silly but I have tried so hard to recreate taco truck tacos at home. I can never get the tortilla right.
These tacos are double corn tortillas that are super soft yet have a little bit of crunch to them from the grill. Each of the four tacos was filled to the max with tender bits of steak, cilantro and onion. There was a small container of hot sauce which I gladly used every last drop of. The four taco were delicious and really left me wishing I had gone for the fifth. I really like good tacos.
The influx of taco trucks is never a bad thing. I will stop almost every time I see one. Tacos are so delicious and the perfect food truck food. Tacos El Jefe doesn’t really do anything different than any one else but they make a super tasty taco and I’m really glad I stopped.
