Yes, I picked up paczki from Quality Dairy on my way to Lansing, but no, that wasn’t my lunch.

I was working a late shift in Lansing so I didn’t get to town until about 2:00.  I didn’t want a big meal but I wanted something to eat to hold me over the rest of the night.  I was going to be trapped in my work site for quite a while.

There’s a bagel place near downtown that I have been wanting to stop at but the last few times I was there, it was a Monday morning and they were closed.   This time, it was a Wednesday afternoon and I was able to make it before closing time.

Goodfellas Bagel Deli is inside the Meijer Capital City Market on East Michigan Avenue and Larch Street.   There is an entrance to the building on that corner but the parking lot is behind the building accessible from either Larch Street or a little further down past the building on Michigan.    Unlike Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids which incorporates their parking into the structure, Capital City Market has a large surface lot behind the building where there is an entrance to the Market.

Just adding here that I love these urban Meijer concepts.  There’s one in Grand Rapids too but instead of a bagel shop, they have West Side Deli.   When I lived in Lansing back in the late aughts and worked at what was then Oldsmobile Park, this corner was a gas station and tire service shop.

Goodfellas is near the front of the store right next to the produce section. There’s also a fresh sushi counter and a small coffee shop.

The menu is pretty small and consists of bagel sandwiches and breakfast burritos. There are also “side options” that include a small waffle and a hash brown so this is mostly a breakfast type of joint but breakfast sandwiches taste good all day.

I ordered The Don Sandwich on an Everything Bagel. The sandwich includes ham, bacon, egg, whole grain mustard and garlic and herb cream cheese. It took about 5 minutes for the sandwich to be made and cost right around $9 which is paid right there at the counter. There is some seating near the cafe but I just headed back to my car to eat because I already had a drink there.

The sandwich was kind of a mess. The cream cheese and mustard, while delicious, made the meat all kinds of slippery and things just kind of slid around. I did my best to get a hold of the bagel but it was a really good thing I grabbed some napkins. It was a delicious sandwich and everything I love about breakfast bagel sandwiches…just a little hard to eat. I kind of complain when bagel sandwiches don’t have cream cheese but here I am kind of complaining about one with cream cheese being hard to eat. I feel like I complain about everything….except the flavor. This sandwich was super tasty.

My daughter was the one who really turned me on to bagel sandwiches. It was kind of an accident. She doesn’t eat the sandwiches but she really likes bagels so when we travel, I’ll try to find a local bagel joint to get her breakfast. And since I’m there, I’ll get myself something too. I love find good bagel joints and will eat them for any meal. Goodfellas is a great option to have while shopping at this great supermarket. It’s also one of those places that are a good stop even if you don’t have to stop for milk and eggs.
