Yeah…sorry.  Another chain blog post.

I didn’t have any overtime or any side gigs last week and that really cuts the paycheck down.  We had to be a little more judicious when it came to eating out.

The kids were skating at Wings Event Center last Wednesday.   I wouldn’t normally go there after work but J had a Zoom meeting that night and she didn’t want to start it at WEC then have to log off and drive home in a snow storm and log back on.  She’d miss way too much.   So I didn’t take a lunch and got out of work a little bit earlier so she could make her meeting.

Our go-to when the kids skate at WEC is Jimmy Johns.  It’s right down the street.  It’s quick.  It’s fairly cheap.  And everyone likes it.

The Jimmy Johns closest to Wings Event Center is on Sprinkle Road at the intersection with Vanrick Drive just to the south of the I-94 interchange.   The sub shop is actually an addition that was added on to what is now Butler’s Breakfast & Lunch.  It was in early 2017 that Michelle’s put an addition on the back of the building specifically for this Jimmy John’s.

We pretty much always use the app to order now. We realized we were going there so much, we should probably take advantage of the deals that app gives. J had already ordered for the kids and they were already sitting at WEC eating. I just had to order for myself.

I picked one of the new toasted sandwiches and made it a combo with a bottle of Coke (a slight upcharge) and a Red Velvet Cookie Sandwich (also a slight upcharge). The cost was was a little over $14 and the bag of food was sitting on the pick up shelf when I got there about 15 minutes after I ordered.

I grabbed the bag and headed to the arena to eat.

I was really excited to try the toasted sub. I picked the Ultimate Italian which came with capicola, salami, ham, bacon, Parmesan, Provolone, lettuce tomato, onion, mayo oregano, basil, and oil and vinegar. I left off the mayo, tomato, and onion but added the Jimmy Peppers. Toasting the sweet Jimmy John’s bread is something I can’t believe they’ve never thought of before. The bread is already delicious on it’s own but toasting it….wow! If these stay on the menu, it will always be what I order. There is a lot more meat than I expected and veggies were given a hefty portion as well. This is easily the best sandwich I’ve ever gotten from Jimmy John’s.

I’m usually good with a bag of chips but I saw the Red Velvet Cookie Sandwich and decided to do something different. Essentially there is cream cheese frosting stuffed between two tiny red velvet cakes. This is way more of a cake than a cookie. There are sprinkles stuck to the filling and they ended up everywhere on my table. It’s a nice treat and it was delicious but I actually really missed the salty chips to go with my sandwich.

I used to hate Jimmy John’s. I mean hate it. I had a couple of really bad experiences when Jimmy John’s was starting to pop up all over the place. My work sites would cater Jimmy John’s and the sandwiches were always more mayo than meat. I was so turned off by the excessive amount of mayo on the sandwiches that I didn’t eat them for years. I finally got so hungry one day at work, I stopped at the Jimmy John’s in Wayland. That was about ten years ago and I’ve been going back ever since.

This location on Sprinkle Road isn’t much different….actually isn’t any different than any other Jimmy John’s location. It’s convenient for us to grab a sandwich then head to skating practice. We’re about to transition away from WEC for the spring/summer so we won’t be eating there as much but when WEC practices start back up again next fall, this will go back to being our go-to weeknight meal.
