I get relentlessly made fun of a the old man at work….especially when I travel with my younger colleagues.

Most of it is warranted. I’m the guy that likes to be at the airport four hours early (in my defense, it was LAX and last time I went through there, it took a helluva lot longer).

I was meeting a co-worker in Lansing for a job in Detroit. I let him pick the time and I picked our usual meeting spot at the park and ride between the two truck stops on Grand River Avenue in Waterton Township near where I-96 and I-69 split on the northwest side of Lansing.

I was just about to Saginaw Highway when I got a text message from my colleague. He hadn’t left Grand Rapids yet. Granted, I was early as I intended to get breakfast but I ended up having about an hour a half to kill now as he wasn’t even planning on leaving for another half hour or so.

I really just wanted a bagel sandwich. I went to the Pilot, got gas, grabbed a Pepsi, then looked up bagel shops near where I was.

A few came up. A few I already knew about. A couple I didn’t.

I picked one of the ones I didn’t know about in nearby Grand Ledge since I had quite a bit of time to kill.

Flour Child Bakery and Cafe is on Bridge Street near Scott Street in downtown Grand Ledge. The building is a one story older brick building that used to be two storefronts. Flour child took out one of the doors and has taken over the whole building. The bakery opened in 2016 after starting as a booth at the Grand Ledge Farmer’s Market. It was named best Best Lansing Area Bakery four years in a row by City Pulse’s Top of the Town. They’ve expanded over the years and even opened up an event space late last year.

You walk in to an order area with a huge display case and a menu of hot food and drinks hanging above it. There are baskets of fresh made bagels on the wall and fresh baked goods sitting on the counter.

There’s also a display case with sweet treats off to one side and a little bit of seating in this front area.

I wanted a bagel sandwich. I had made the trip out to Grand Ledge when I saw they had fresh bagels.

I ordered the Meat, Egg, & Cheese Sandwich on an Everything Bagel. There are several options for meat but I chose the bacon. The employee grabbed a bagel out of the basket, sent it through the toaster oven, then passed it to the kitchen to complete the sandwich. While that was happening, I paid at a cash register near the end of the counter. The cost was just under $7.

I was told it would be a few minutes so I headed in to the dining room to wait. There’s a lunch counter right at the wall that used to divide the two buildings and several tables and booths to fill the space. There’s not much in the way of decor. It’s pretty minimalist but still rather cozy.

There’s a pick up window on the back wall. A few minutes after sitting down, heard my name called out. My sandwich was wrapped up and ready to go.

I really didn’t have any place to be right away so I just sat in my car and ate. The sandwich was exactly what I was looking for. The bagel was loaded with the Everything seasoning which gave it a crunch on every bite. The bacon was crispy and the egg and cheese had kind of melted together to make one tasty conglomeration. This is the kind of sandwich I would eat every morning if I lived near a good bagel shop like this.

Flour Child Bakery is a great little shop in downtown Grand Ledge. I went out of my way to find a bagel sandwich and man, did I find a good one.
