I hate the days I get stuck in Grand Rapids late.
L had an appointment in the morning so I took half a sick day. Work was apparently annoyed by that (meaning I should have just taken a full sick day) and they brought me up to Grand Rapids in the afternoon. I got assigned a task that would keep in Grand Rapids past my shift end time so it was going to be a long night.
A co-worker was annoyed that they even brought me to Grand Rapids because it wasn’t really necessary. He decided to take a bullet for me and took the late assignment. He’d get home a few minutes late but not as late as I would have.
I was in South Grand Rapids when he met me to take over the job. I thanked him many, many times then started heading south towards Kalamazoo.
I was hungry and needed gas. I was driving down Kalamazoo Avenue in Kentwood and I saw a familiar sign.
Kum & Go has two Kentwood locations among the eight locations in West Michigan. I came upon the location at the corner of Kalamazoo Avenue and 52nd Street. This corner location used to be a used car dealership but now, it’s a gas station and convenience store with that all too funny name.
I got gas first then headed inside to grab something to eat.
The layout of the store was familiar but it was also different.
There is a large kitchen area near the back of the store. In my past few experiences, in nearby stores, there were order kiosks on this counter and food was made fresh. That’s apparently not the case anymore. There were no order kiosks and the kitchen was dark.
There was a selection of pre-made sandwiches and slices of pizza in warming cabinets. I was hungry and I typically like gas station food so I grabbed a couple of those.
I headed over to the typical gas station convenience store part of the store to grab a couple of Pepsi’s. One for the drive home and one for the morning. I got two sandwiches and two bottles of pop for right around $15.
I ended up sitting in the parking lot and eating both sandwiches.
I started with the hot honey chicken. The sandwich is about what you’d expect from a gas station. It’s a piece of fried chicken drizzled with hot honey and smash between two pieces of bread. There are a couple of pickles on the bottom but that’s about it as far as condiments. The sandwich was gas station quality. Not good but not bad either. It was a little sticky from the honey (yes, I see the irony in that my hands go a little sticky from a place called Kum & Go) but that’s about all there is to say about it. It was no better or no worse than a chicken sandwich I’ve gotten from other gas station chains.
The other sandwich I grabbed was a simple bacon cheeseburger. Call me weird but I’ll take an overcooked gas station cheeseburger over McDonalds any day. This sandwich was also smashed up pretty good and had a decent size burger patty topped with cheese and bacon. These burgers can always get a little tough because they sit there and continue to cook but that’s to be expected.
Not really sure when Kum & Go made the switch to the premade food but this kind of drags them down to just another gas station. The kiosk food wasn’t all that great to begin with…it was fine but they had some odd choices. I don’t expect every gas station to be a Buc-ees. I spend a lot of time eating meals in the car while I’m at work. As long as they have a hot sandwich for me to grab when I stop for a bathroom break, I’m going to be happy.
