Summer is almost over and with that, Lunchtime Live will be ending soon. I want to make sure I’ve taken advantage of the great lunch options all the way up until they pack up shop for the summer.
For the third week in a row, I was in my office in downtown Kalamazoo on Friday. I had an assignment I had to run out to around 11:30 but I was back in my leather office chair by a little before 1:00.
I stopped what I was doing and made my way towards Bronson Park. There was still about 45 minutes left before everyone would move on to their next gig and I noticed another truck that I haven’t eaten from yet.
That truck is Kalako Street Cuisine & Events based in the Greater Kalamazoo area. The small black pull behind trailer was parked right across the street from City Hall. I did my usual walk up and down South Street to make sure I wasn’t missing anything but I pretty much knew what I was getting before I even got to the park.
The menu on this particular day was pretty small and consisted of things that could be pretty easily eaten quickly on the go. I perused the paper menu hanging on the side of the truck, but again, knew pretty much what I wanted when I walked up.
I picked the Double Smash Burger & Fries and added a can of Mountain Dew. The cost was right around $15. I took a step back on to the grass to wait for my name to be called. It took a little under five minutes for a guy to poke his head out of the window and yell my name.
I started on the fries on the walk back to the office. They were simple but I was hungry. The fries were frozen skin on fries that would have benefited from something to dip them in. I only ate a few on the walk because I knew I had some mustard back at the office. I’m one of those weird mustard on fries guys.
The Double Smash Burger didn’t last long once I got back to my desk. The sandwich is two smash patties with caramelized onions, American cheese, lettuce, pickles, and Kalako sauce. I left the onions off for obvious reasons. The burger was a fantastic smash burger with those crispy edges and a tender, juicy middle. The Kalako Sauce was kind of like a Big Mac sauce. I could get some hints of tanginess but they didn’t over do it. I knew it was there but it didn’t overpower the rest of the toppings or the meat itself. The sandwich was a perfect blend of delicious meat, crunchy from the lettuce and pickles and tangy from the sauce.
I love burgers and I love burgers from a food truck almost as much as I love tacos from a food truck.
I’m bummed summer is winding down and I won’t be able to get tasty food like this every week. I haven’t seen Kalako Street Cuisine around much yet but they’re out there and the handing out delicious food from this little truck.
