I knew we weren’t going to be able to do much for our anniversary so I took a day off from work and met J for lunch in Vicksburg where she works. We had a nice meal…just the two of us…at Roxie’s Breakfast and Lunch.
J, obviously, had to go back to work and I was heading back to Kalamazoo for L’s volleyball game, but I had some time before I needed to be at her school.
J has stopped a few times at the bakery in downtown Vicksburg and brought home some amazing bread. Bread is one thing everyone in my family really likes. L will just break off pieces of a baguette and eat it plain.
I have had their bread many times but I haven’t been able to stop in to the bakery myself. And since I had some time, I was going to bring home some bread.
Mackenzies Bakery is in downtown Vicksburg on the corner of Prairie and Main Street. The building has been in Vicksburg and has seen so many uses over the years. Most famously, it was Doris-Lee’s Sweet shop, but it was most recently a furniture shop. It was bought a few years ago by the people that own The Mill at Vicksburg. Not too long after that, those same people also bought the Mackenzies Bakery name, recipes, and equipment from the now closed Kalamazoo bakery.
The shop is not very big. The public facing side is a counter with a small sweets case and baskets of bread on the wall behind it. The menu for the day is written on a chalkboard above the stacks of fresh bread. There are some coffee options too so you can stop in the morning for your coffee and a pastry to start the day.
My family loves the Struan bread so I got one of those and got it sliced. Struan is an Irish harvest bread that’s traditionally made from leftover grains and seeds. It’s called “the perfect toasting bread” and that’s what we mostly use it for. It makes really good toast and sandwiches. This is the bread J brings home most often when she stops at Mackenzies. They also have Struan rolls available sold individually.
Knowing how much L loves baguettes, I also got a French Baguette. We do a lot of differnt things with baguettes. Garlic bread, sandwiches, rip it off and eat it plain. It’s rare that a baguette will go to waste in our house. They’re pretty versatile.
When most people think bakery, they think sweets. That’s not the kind of bakery Mackenzies is. They don’t do cakes or cupcakes BUT, they do have a few sweets in a glass display case next to the cash register.
I grabbed myself a Tollhouse Cookie for the drive back to Kalamazoo. The Tollhouse Cookie is a thin, crispy chocolate chip cookie. Super delicious and a great snack that I finished pretty quickly before pulling out of downtown Vicksburg.
Two loaves of bread and a cookie cost me less than $10.
I love that you can walk in to Mackenzies and get such delicious bread at any time. It feels like such a throwback to go buy your bread at a store that only makes bread instead of buying it from a megamart. The bread is delicious and it’s pretty cheap when you consider the quality you’re getting. It’s always a good day when J goes for a walk and brings us home a loaf.
