I’ve mentioned it a lot recently but I work a lot of Friday nights in the fall. It always amazes me how hard it is to find something to eat when I get off work around 10:00 on this Friday nights.

I know it was 25 years ago, but when I was in high school, we’d always go out for pizza after football games. I’m working the same time as high school football games right now and it’s nuts to me that almost every pizza place closes at or before 9:00 on Friday nights.

A lot of times, I try to get my pizza before the overtime shift starts. I wasn’t able to do that a couple of weeks ago. B was starting AYSO soccer and J also had to work a rare Friday night shift. I got out of work a little early on the regular part of my shift then headed to the AYSO fields to watch B. J’s parents were getting him there and taking him home until J could get back home, but I wanted one of us to be there for at least part of the game and help him get to the right field and find his coach.

That means, I couldn’t eat before my overtime shift.

My shift ended around 10:00 that night, just like it usually does. I was near Richland to finish things up so I knew I’d be heading back towards Kalamazoo on Gull Road. I was curious to see what was open along that stretch and found a familiar late night stop in a new location.

Two Fellas Grill on Gull Road is an additional location of the popular late night eatery with it’s main location near WMU’s campus. The Gull Road location is in a strip mall on the northside of Gull Road near Lake Crest Drive. This space was previously Szechuan Oriental Cuisine.

I clearly was not the one person looking for something to eat after football time. The restaurant had a big group of kids from nearby Gull Lake High School which had a home game that night so the idea of going out to eat after a football game is not something of the past.

The order counter s in the back of the restaurant. It’s just a whole in the wall with Two Fellas expansive wrap menu on a board above the counter. I always look at the menu thinking I’m going to get something different but the choice is always been two chicken wraps.

I put in my order for Roofs A Blazin wrap. The cost was a little over $10. The lady working the register said it’s be about ten minutes so I took a seat at one of the booths that appears to be leftover from the previous life of this place. A few minutes after I sat down, someone came out of the kitchen with a paper bag weighted down by the weight of Two Fellas oversized wraps.

J was already home but I was anxious to get home and hear about the rest of B’s game and how her day went so I grabbed the bag and headed back towards the other side of town.

The Roofs A Blazin wrap is one of my favorites. The large, soft flour tortilla is filled with crispy chicken, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, jalapenos, hot sauce, and choice of ranch or bleu cheese (I pick the bleu cheese). The wrap is like having tiny buffalo wings stuffed in to a sandwich. The chicken is really crispy, even after sitting in the bleu cheese dressing for the 20 minute drive home and the hot sauce and jalapenos give it just enough of a kick even with the cooling factor of the dressing. It’s such a good wrap. I would have gone with just a little less of the bleu cheese dressing for even more of a kick but it was tasty the way it was.

Two Fellas Grill has had a few different locations around town…mostly near campus…and I’ve loved every one of them. The late night food scene around campus is getting better but it really sucks in the rest of the city. It’s such a bummer everyone is closing by 9:00 or so…even on the weekends. I know COVID changed things but pizza places closing early around here was thing even before COVID. I’ve always had that issue. I love that there was a group of high schoolers that had clearly just come from a football game hanging out together just like we did back in the stone ages. Two Fellas will always be one of the best late night places in town no matter where it’s at. I love that the east side has a place to go other than McDonalds late at night.
