Friday night is pizza night. You know that. I’ve written that many, many times.

Friday nights in the fall are overtime nights for me. It’s hard to turn down the extra hours every week for about 13 weeks so I take all that I can get.

Last Friday, I was on my way to Battle Creek. I’m running out of pizza restaurants I haven’t been to yet in Battle Creek.

There is one I kept forgetting about though. It’s not too far off I-94 and I could easily order online before leaving Kalamazoo.

Cavoni’s Pizza & Grinders is on on Beckley Road at Riverside Drive in the Minges Creek Plaza shopping center. The pizzeria takes up a space near the back corner near La Cocina Mexicana. The restaurant is one of (I believe) three. Their website lists a Hillsdale location and there is a place with the same logo and name in Three Rivers. They’re all related to the Mancino’s family. Cavoni’s is the maiden name of the Mancino family matriarch.

I used EatsBC to put an order in for a 16″ pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and jalapenos before I started towards Battle Creek. The cost was right around $18 before tip.

The restaurant has a pretty big sit down dining area which always seems to surprise me when I walk into a pizza place. In my brain, all pizza places are carry-out or delivery…and that’s just not true.

I headed to the order counter at the back of the dining room. I told the cashier I had an EatsBC order. She headed back to the kitchen to grab it. I had already paid (and tipped) online. It had just come out of the oven and I could feel the heat through the cardboard box.

My dilemma with pizza night on the road is where to eat it. I needed to go to Circle K to get gas and a Pepsi so I ended up eating it in that parking lot. That wasn’t my best idea.

The pizza was delicious. The pizza is a thinner crust with a thick, sweet sauce. The cheese, meats, and jalapenos are heavily layered on top. The pizza is thin enough that you can snap it over to eat like a New York slice but it’s thick enough to hold up to the weight. The reason I said it wasn’t a great idea is because it was pretty greasy….but that’s to be expected with a lot of meat. It was a delicious, sweet, greasy pizza….but I was trying to eat in the car and my shirt ended up with enough grease on it that I had to change before I headed to my job site that evening….lucky I had an extra shirt in my car.

Cavoni’s Pizza & Grinders makes a solid pizza. It’s so much better than the major chain options in the area. I really like this crust of crust. It’s not too thin that it can’t hold up to the weight of the toppings but it’s not so thick you feel like you’re eating a loaf of bread.
