This was another one of those days I didn’t really know what my plan was. I got off work around 7:00. B was with my in-laws because we didn’t have childcare for the last week of summer and L was at the rink skating. J was also at the rink but she had a meeting. I didn’t really know what to do for dinner.

I thought I needed to go pick L up and while I love Burdick’s, it can get kind of expensive so I decided to grab something before heading to Wings West.

I ended up going a little out of the way. I wanted to stop at the Crossroads Mall to check on something but they close at 7 so that wasn’t an option. I was in Portage already so I started trying to think of something I hadn’t eaten at yet in Portage. I came up with tacos.

I chose Fiesta Burrito because they had online ordering which makes my life so much easier.

Fiesta Burrito is on Centre Avenue in Portage near US-131. The restaurant is in the Woodbridge Shopping Village near Moorsbridge Road. The shopping center has undergone some extension renovations in the last couple of years. I had been to this shop before when it was The Big Burrito and The Real Deal: Classic Burgers and Shakes. If you look at the pictures from those blog posts, you’ll see almost an entirely different exterior from what is there now.

I’m not exactly sure how long Fiesta Burrito has been in the space but I know it’s been a while. I’ve driven past it several times and always meant to look it up. I don’t go in to this shopping center often but I drive by it a lot. I guess I always assumed this was a full service restaurant just because of it’s location. Not sure why I thought that but that is why I’ve never stopped in before.

Turns out, I was wrong. It’s a counter service restaurant.

I had put my order in while I was sitting at Crossroads Mall and by the time I got down to Centre Avenue, it was ready. I grabbed the order and headed back to my car.

If I had known, I could have just ordered when I got there and ate in the dining room. There’s a large brightly painted dining room just as you walk in the door. I didn’t realize at the time that I had been in this space before with other quick service restaurants. It had been quite a while ago. It clicked to me later that I should have known this wasn’t a sit down restaurant.

One of the new features is right outside the doors. There’s a great little common space for the businesses in the shopping center. There are some tables to sit an eat and some Adirondack chairs if you just want to relax and look at the Little Caesars sign…but it is a nice little green space to break up the the parking lot from the businesses.

I headed over the Wings West to eat in my car like I usually do. I ordered four Steak Tacos Mexicano plus an order of Chips and Queso.

I started with the chips and queso. The chips came in a large bag and were pretty standard tortilla chips. Nothing super special.

The queso was this really thin, really delicious cheese sauce. Too many times queso turns into glue if it sits more than a few minutes outside of a warmer. This queso never hardened up. I actually went back to it a few hours later and it was still this very liquidy. I was a little bummed when I ran out of queso because I still had a few chips left and this was a really good queso.

I only ordered four tacos instead of my usual five because these were expensive tacos. The cost was around $4.25 each which almost made me reconsider ordering. I know everything is getting more expensive but 5 tacos would have cost me over $20.

I decided I was hungry enough and didn’t want to find someplace else so I ordered 4 tacos. While I got a little bit of sticker shock, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the to-go box and found four tacos overflowing with steak, cilantro, and onions. So, yes, it is a little pricey, but they don’t skimp on the filling. The steak was really tender and easy to bite through. I grabbed a little bit of the red salsa that came in the bag and poured it on each of the four tacos. In the end, I was glad that I stuck with it and picked up tacos for dinner on this night.

So, like I said. A little on the pricey side. My meal was close to $25, but it was a really good meal.

Knowing what I know now…that Fiesta Burrito is a counter service restaurant…I can stick this in my taco rotation. I was a little bummed when the meal was over because the food was so good I wanted to keep eating.
