I didn’t plan on working last Sunday….but something came up and I ended up in St. Joseph County again.

The job was only a couple of hours but needed to be done. I did what I needed to do then rushed back home. I still had to cook for a pot luck L was going to later that night….but first, I needed food.

I really needed to grab something quick so I was headed toward the Speedway in White Pigeon. Their sandwiches or Tornados are good enough when I’m in a hurry.

As I got close to US-131, I noticed a new gas station near the corner. It had been a while since I’ve been to White Pigeon so I was surprised to see it. Even more surprised to see a better option than reheated gas station burgers.

Krispy Krunchy Chicken is inside the new Amoco station on Chicago Road (US-12) east of the intersection with US-131 on the western edge of White Pigeon. I have no idea when this was built but it has to have been within the last year or so. It still looks and feels brand new.

The convenience part of the gas station is pretty large. The chicken is all the way in the back. You can see the counter when you walk in but you have to walk past all the snacks first.

Like most gas station chicken places, the chicken is already cooked and under warming lamps waiting.

Unlike most Krispy Krunchy Chicken locations, this one offers pizza too but it’s not part of the franchise. It’s a separate part of the gas station business. There’s only one pizza option in White Pigeon so they offer up slices if you’re in a hurry but you can also order a whole pizza.

I ordered 8 tenders and a small side of wedges. I was hungry havev missed breakfast and lunch so I went bigger than I needed to. The chicken was boxed up then I grabbed a couple of Pepsi’s from the cooler and headed to the front cash register to pay. The total for the chicken and the wedges was a little over $12.

Most people are going to grab their chicken and go but there is a couple of dine in options. They have a table or two inside near a secondary door and they have some outside seating with picnic tables in front of the building. I was somewhat in a hurry so it was an in the car meal for me.

I grabbed the wedges first because there’s nothing worse than cold french fries. The wedges are really thick hunks of deep fried potato. They crispy and seasoned really well on the outside and soft and airy in the middle. I have such a weird relationship with wedges. I like them….but I don’t always like the really big ones. There’s a thing as too much potato in every bite. These were just on the borderline of that. They were good though and I ate the whole box.

I got eight tenders and I did not need to order eight tenders. These tenders were huge. I’ve had Krispy Krunchy Chicken a few times before so I should have known that but I had a brain fart. The chicken is actually really good. Usually gas station chicken is just passable but I get kind of excited when I see a Krispy Krunchy Chicken. I did the Cajun tenders so the big, juicy hunks of meat have a crispy, slightly spicy breading wrapped around them. I ate three of the eight and took the rest home. I offered them to everyone else but I still ended up with three leftover before I noticed the cat with his nose in the box. He took one too and ran off with it. I found a half eaten tender later. The final two I ended up eating for dinner later.

The first time I had Krispy Krunchy Chicken was years ago in Grand Rapids. I had never heard of the chain then and was looking for something different. Now, I see them popping up in small town gas stations. The chicken has really grown on me. I like gas station chicken. I eat at the Chester’s Chicken in downtown Kalamazoo often. But there’s a difference in gas station chicken and Krispy Krunchy stands out as the superior choice.
