I was unexepectadly without a co-worker one day last week which meant I got to meet someone from the Grand Rapids office to work with instead.
Our assignment for that day was in Allegan. We had a morning job then the rest of the afternoon for office work. She went back to Grand Rapids while I headed to the Kalamazoo office.
It was around lunch time and I knew there are a couple of food trucks that set up between Allegan and US-131 in Plainwell. I skipped stopping somewhere in Allegan to eat hoping I would find a food truck I’ve been looking for along the way.
I did end up finding that food truck. It’s the Mobile Crave and it was set up at the old Allegan Street Elementary in Otsego. The bright orange taco truck parks some days right next to the intersection at Allegan Street (M-89) and North Street just to the west of downtown Otsego in the old school parking lot.
I have been craving good food truck tacos for a while but I’ve been having a hard time finding a food truck open when I’m in the area. I was really excited when I got close to the old school and could see their banners hanging out by the road.
There was a couple in front of me when I got there so I was able to take my time looking at the menu.
I ended up ordering the quesabirria tacos alongside an order of chips and queso. The cost was right around $18. They handed me one of those restaurant buzzers so I hung out in the parking lot near my car until my food was ready.
It took about five minutes for my order to be boxed. up. When the buzzer went off, I headed to the pick up window to find a bag with my food waiting. There was also a big selection of hot sauces if you need a little more spice but I got birria tacos so I passed on adding more heat.
I headed back to the office in Kalamazoo to eat knowing I would make a super huge mess of myself if I tired to eat birria tacos in the car.
I actually started with the chips and queso while I quickly finished up a couple of tasks in the office. The chips were mas produced round tortilla chips and there were a lot of them.
The queso is a thick, white cheese sauce that had just a little bit of spice to it. It reminded me a lot of Moe’s Southwest Grill but better. There was also a lot of the queso too. I could have made a meal just out of that.
I ordered the quesabirria tacos because they have cheese in them. The order is three tacos with birria beef, cilantro, onion, and chihuahua cheese wrapped up in chili oil fried corn tortillas. The tacos come with a bowl of consomme on the side to dip them in. I’m just gonna say, I love birria tacos. The fried tortillas really add such a dimension to the simple street tacos. I’m glad I went with the cheese option. I usually don’t with tacos but the addition of cheese made these tacos so amazingly delicious.
I was having a taco craving and The Mobile Crave was the perfect spot to take care of that. It seems like BBQ trucks became all the rage when food trucks took off and taco trucks are just now starting to catch up in this area. I love BBQ but I really love tacos. I’m all for a taco truck on every corner. I would eat at every one of them. The Mobile Crave is doing something really good. I hope our paths cross again in my travels around southwest Michigan.
