Friday is pizza day, right?
My co-worker and I had to make a quick trip to Battle Creek sort of late in the afternoon a couple of Friday’s ago. I wasn’t planning on eating anything but he forgot his lunch (or just didn’t want what he brought..I didn’t really ask) and asked me if I was planning on stopping somewhere.
I told him I wasn’t but if he saw something or if there was something he wanted, we could stop on our back to Kalamazoo,
We drove in to Battle Creek on M-96 because our stop was on that side of town and it’s quicker than taking the highway.
I was kind of looking around as we were driving to see if anything new had popped up since the last time I was in that area….and sure enough, something caught my eye and I ended up stopping for a lunch I didn’t plan on.
Grab N Go Pizza is on Dickman Road near Army Street in Springfield just outside of Battle Creek. The small pizza shop shares a building with the Custer Party Store. Prior to becoming a pizza joint, this part of the building was a Burmese Grocery Store
The shop isn’t very big. There’s really just an order counter and a warmer with some pizza slices and that’s about it.
I was hoping this would be a slice place with the name “Grab n Go.” We didn’t really have time to order a pizza so I took a chance and stopped in. That chance paid off.
We were there kind of at an off time so there wasn’t a lot to choose from. The warmer had a few paper plates with pizza slices on them and a few small Styrofoam boxes with with wings inside.
My colleague grabbed two slices of pizza. I took the remaining slice and some wings. The cost for my meal was right around $9.
I ate the slice of pizza on the way to the car. It was actually two slices because it was cut party cut style. This pizza has a pretty dense crust and is topped with a thick layer of cheese and a thin layer of sauce. The slice I picked was the meat lovers so there also several different kinds of meats packed in under the c cheese. The unique thing about this pizza, as my co-worker pointed out, was the cheddar cheese. There was the usual mozzarella but there was also some cheddar mixed in which gave it a different taste than typical pizza by the slice.
I had to wait until I got back to Kalamazoo to eat the wings. There were three wings stuffed in to the box and when I paid, the cashier offered up a couple of different sauces that were in bottles next to the register. I grabbed the Buffalo sauce and squirted on enough to cover all the wings and then some. The wings were nice and crispy despite being in a Styrofoam container and covered in sauce. They were on the meatier side too. I was surprised at how tasty these wings were considering I have no idea how long they had been sitting.
I always love grab and go places but since we stopped in at an off time, there really wasn’t much to choose from. I assume if we stopped during the lunch hour there would have been better selections.
Still, Grab N Go pizza was pretty tasty. I’ve seen some pretty good reviews from their whole pizzas and that’s what made me decide I was going to get lunch on this particular day. This spot is kind of out between the Air National Guard Base and Fort Custer so there are a lot of people in the area looking for lunch and this spot will fill a gap for quick, cheap, tasty meals in the area.
